What happened to the tween phase? I just saw a TikTok about the Disney Princess American Girl Doll collection and saw a comment that said "why does all the good stuff happen when we're grown up". I responded to this comment with "at least you have adult money now so your parents can't say no." This girl proceeded to respond with "I'm 13 what adult money?" THEN YOU'RE NOT GROWN UP. When I was 13 I was reading Dork Diaries, buying sparkly unicorn notebooks for school, buying the most ridiculous colour combinations of outfits at Justice and going home after school to go play Minecraft or Roblox. There aren't things made for 11-13 year old girls anymore and it's making them think they have to either be a baby or be an adult/older teen. Social media killed the tween stage. There are 13 year old girls on the internet becoming influencers dressing and acting like they're 18. Which is not only damaging to their development but could also put them at risk. Children should not be posting pictures and videos online in revealing outfits for the whole world to see. The majority of people who follow these teen influencers are adult men. They're being made famous by predators and telling each other that's what they should aspire to. If 13 year olds want to be on social media, fine, I get it. I joined social media at 12. BUT MAKE YOUR ACCOUNTS PRIVATE. Where are the parents of these kids? Not to mention most of the Sephora kids are 11-13... They're in the tween phase and their parents aren't putting age appropriate limits on them. Yeah, I started wearing makeup when I was around 12. I wasn't doing it in a way that made me look 18+, I'll tell you that for sure. No child should. Especially when they're online. Again: it puts them in danger. At Christmas time kids were posting their Christmas lists and they looked more "adult" than mine AND my sisters. Yeah, sure, I'm a very childish person. My sister isn't. She still had more toys on her wishlist than these kids cause she collects Lego. They're 12 and asking for skincare and makeup, $100 pyjamas, $50 water bottles... It's insane. It all just seems so weird to me. Why are 13 year olds shopping at Lululemon, Victorias Secret and Aritzia. Bring back Justice. Victorias Secret I'm pretty sure still has Pink... Why are they not shopping there??? I know logically when I was a kid I wanted to grow up. But I still accepted that I hadn't yet. And looking back on it even having accepted I was a kid I still wish I hadn't wished to grow up faster. And I get the feeling this abandonment of the tween phase is going to catch up with these girls a lot harder than people think right now.
